Finding a Mechanic

Josiah is a car guy.  Or at least as any teenager wants to be.  He is always wanting a new car.  Wanting to trade in his car.  Wanting to upgrade his car.  Excited about the new thing that he got today, but more excited about the possibilities of what could happen if…

So in the midst of all of his “what would happen if I sold this and got that” he was looking for cars on the internet.  I think he looked on Facebook, Craigslist, Google, and this app I had never heard of “LetGo.”

He was looking in Columbus and the surrounding areas when he ran upon a car near us that he wanted to see.

This was a fourth generation mustang with chevy 350 in it.  That’s right a Ford Mustang with a Chevy engine.  I had never heard of such, and when Josiah asked me to go have a look I jumped at the chance.

The guy's place was hard to find even with GPS, but we eventually drove up to a small trailer behind someone else’s house.  There were several cars around, and there was the Mustang.

A very skinny man who dressed like my dad, and talked with authority about cars and country twang, was eager to show us the car.  He explained how he had always wanted to put a Chevy engine in a Ford, and when he saw this opportunity he took the chance.  He showed us the body work that he had done, and how the engine had to be done in order for it to work in the Ford.  He was proud of his work. For good reason.  He would not let Josiah drive the car, but he did take him out in it.  Josiah and I were both impressed with the car.  It was a good looking car, and it was fast.

He had other cars too that he showed us.  All impressive pieces of work.  He was the textbook example of a shade tree mechanic.

While Josiah looked around and inspected the car, I asked the guy about the Nova.  Clarence hadn’t been gone long and getting a gas tank in the car seemed like something this guy could do.

We discussed it for awhile.  He was really interested.  I was really interested. And three months after bringing it home I was getting it towed to a Mechanic’s home, with no shop, in an area of the county called Booger Bottom.  The Mechanic, in his 60’s, still goes by the name Z-BAD and has the badges on his coveralls and his cars to prove it.

This first thing he did was save me money on towing.  I am not sure if he is saving me money today or not, but I like the way we deal with one another, and I have been happy with the work that he has done.  He has done more than put a gas tank in it.  And he will do more, I’m sure.
